Biography:


Prof. Fumihito Arai is now a professor at the Institute of Innovation for Future Society, Dept. of Micro- Nano Mechanical Science & Engineering, Tokyo University. He received the Master of Eng. degree from the Tokyo Univ. of Science in 1988 and Dr. of Eng. from Nagoya University in 1993. Since 1994, he was Assistant Professor of Nagoya University. Since 2005, he was Professor of Tohoku University. Since 2010, he has been Professor of Nagoya University. Since 2013, he has been Director of Center for Micro- nano Mechatronics, Nagoya University. His research fields are Bio-MEMS, Micro-Nano Robotics, and BioRobotics. He was the Vice-President for Technical Activities, IEEE Nanotechnology Council in 2002 and 2003. He was AdCom Member of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in 2009-2011 and 2012-2014. He is the Vice President for Technical Activities, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society since 2014 (until 2017), Editor in Chief of Advanced Robotics since 2012 (until 2017) and IEEE member. He was President of Society for Chemistry and Micro-Nano Systems(CHEMINAS), Japan in 2014 and 2015.

Bionic Humanoid


Abstract:

Along with technological innovation of rapid prototyping, an artificial organ model has become relatively easy to obtain. However, there are few artificial organ models that reproduce physical properties such as hardness, softness, and surface friction characteristics. We have developed Bionic Humanoid, which is an elaborate human model equipped with sensors and actuators to serve as a substitute for and test animals. Bionic Humanoid uses artificial materials to precisely recreate the structure of the human and to mimic physical property of the human. MEMS and 3D printing technologies are used to fabricate Bionic Humanoid. The Bionic Humanoid can be used, for example, to quantify the requirements of medical doctors, assess surgical skills, replicate physical constraints for the development of a medical device, and provide young surgeons with training opportunities. These results will be expanded to other industries as well to realize a new industrial revolution. In this talk, a design concept and a prototype development of Bionic Humanoid for medical simulator and training in eye surgery and neurosurgery will be introduced and discussed for future medical innovation.
